Honoring Phyllis Monks

We were pleased to honor Phyllis Monks as the 2024 recipient of the Gratitude Award from the Community Foundation of Will County.

The Community Foundation of Will County Gratitude Award recognizes individuals in Will County who exemplify excellence in their town through their generosity, charitable efforts and support. The Community Foundation of Will County is proud to honor Phyllis Monk, recipient of our Gratitude Award, while celebrating another year of advancing a culture of philanthropy in Will County.

The mission of The Community Foundation of Will County is to promote philanthropy, connect donors to community needs, and build partnerships to improve the quality of life in our region. Our priority areas include health, education, human services, and the arts.

About The Honoree
Because of her generous spirit and passion for history, most folks are surprised to learn that Phyllis Monks wasn’t born and raised in Crete.

She moved here in 1978 and the town quickly became one of her passions. In addition to raising her family and establishing her legal practice here, Phyllis has been intricately involved with the Crete Area Historical Society, the Crete Woman’s Club, Crete Creative Gallery and School and the Crete Public Library District, to name just a few of the local organizations that have benefited from her time and efforts.

Phyllis has also been a driving force behind the establishment of a Crete Historical Museum, which has a home in the former Crete Congregational Church building. Phyllis also co-authored several books on the history of Crete, chairs the Village of Crete’s Heritage Commission and even represented the east side of the County on the Will County Board.

For over four decades Phyllis has been a strong community motivator for not only preserving the past but moving the Village of Crete forward. Her contributions are innumerable, as our the many grateful and admiring friends she has made here over the years.
